Transvaginal ultrasound is a procedure that helps to diagnose diseases. This procedure is done through abdomen, or as transvaginal ultrasound sonography. In this way, all areas of genital system such as uterine, ovaries, cervix and vagina is considered. This sonogrghy is non-invasive and painless.

Transvaginal ultrasound procedure

First, a tiny tool which is called probe, inserts inside the vagina, that creates waves to take images of your internal organs. Gynecologist moves the probe to see all areas and determines the abnormalities.

Why is transvaginal ultrasound done?

There are different reasons to do this sonography, such as:

  • Determining causes of abnormal uterine bleeding
  • Determining cysts or ovarian masses
  • Primary steps of infertility
  • Uterus changes during the premature pregnancy
  • Pregnancy outside the uterus
  • Monitoring the fetus
  • Hearing heartbeats of the fetus
  • Pelvic pain

Those women who have had abortion during first 3 months, may experience some problems such as vaginal bleeding, then transvaginal ultrasound is an effective procedure to diagnose the problem.

To perform transvaginal ultrasound, bladder should be semi- full.

Patients may have little stress for the first time. If the muscles be contracted, women can feel pain. So, it’s better to take a deep breathe while entering the probe. Feeling little discomfort and pain is common.
